Wigton Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Cumberland), and around 10 miles southwest of Carlisle, is the town of Wigton. The name 'Wigton' is derived from Old English: 'Wicga's tūn', meaning Wicga's farm/settlement, where Wicga was a Saxon chieftain. Geographically it is located between the Lakeland Fells and Solway Firth, the latter of which forms part of the border between England and Scotland. In 1262 Wigton was granted a market charter during the reign of Henry III. Industries historically included agriculture, tanning and linen weaving. At the heart of the town is St Mary's Church which dates from 1788, replacing a previous church from the 12th century on the same site. In 1843 the railway arrived in Wigton, courtesy of the Maryport and Carlisle Railway. Today this is situated on the Cumbrian Coast Line between Barrow-in-Furness and Carlisle, the latter of which takes around 20 minutes to reach from here. At the northern end of the high street is the George Moore Memorial Fountain. This granite fountain was placed here in 1872 dedicated to the memory of his first wife, Eliza Ray. George Moore was a lace merchant and philanthropist, who served his apprenticeship as a draper in Wigton. On each side of the fountain is a bronze relief by pre-Raphaelite sculptor Thomas Woolner showing the Acts of Mercy, 'Visiting the Afflicted', 'Clothing the Naked', 'Instructing the Ignorant' and 'Feeding the Hungry'. Above each sculpture is a carving of the face of Mrs Eliza Moore surrounded by leaves. In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Wigton has been part of the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria. TV broadcaster and author Melvyn Bragg was born in nearby Carlisle and raised in Wigton. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
