I’ll Knit If I Want To: Episode 97

Welcome to I’ll Knit (& Spin!) If I want To! I asked y’all to send in some of your questions (from everything from fiber arts, to designing and on!) so I could put together a little video for y’all every Friday doing my best to answer your questions! In this week’s episode we cover: 1. I’m hoping you can give me some guidance about swatching. I’m planning to make a Weekender, and I’ve tried a few yarn and needle combos. In the yarn I like best (a worsted wool/alpaca blend), I had to go down to a 4.5mm to get gauge, even though the pattern calls for a 5.5mm needle. I like the fabric I made with my swatch. Is it possible to change needle sizes too much when getting gauge? Or am I OK as long as my gauge matches the pattern and I like my fabric? Thank you! 2. You have mentioned before that you soak your knitted garments in warm or even hot water when washing or blocking them. Is this safe for even non superwash garments? How warm or hot do you let the water get? Can you talk more about the benefits of doing high temp water? Is it just about get them cleaner or is it about letting the yarn bloom bloom more? Is there any yarn content that you would only do cool water with? 3. Heeey Andrea, I hope you are feeling a little better and that you can rest! I am very grateful that you keep making videos and I look forward every week to what news you will teach us next. I have a question about your pattern that just came out/is coming out soon, the Shifty Cardigan. I saw it that the cardigan has a 'higher' neck. I'm more of a v-neck fan myself, but, being the adventurous newbie that I am, I have no idea how to change the neck of a cardigan. Certainly not a cardigan that you have to stab. Do you have any tips? Thank you very much in advance and I hope you have a nice day! 4. I am wondering what the etiquette/legality is regarding selling your knit FOs as a side project. Is this only OK if you designed the pattern of the knit? Or is it OK to knit up a pattern that someone else designed and then sell the FO without their consent/sharing the profit? Would never want to infringe upon a copyright or break community etiquette, but it would be a fun little side hustle to sell some fun knit items on etsy/at farmers markets 5. Hi Andrea! I recently made a top-down circular yoke sweater that has little to no intended ease and find it so uncomfortable. It's beautiful, but the sleeves are too snug and pull the rest of the sweater into unnatural positions, no matter how aggressively I block. Would you suggest re-knitting the sleeves at a larger gauge? I don't have any spare yarn so would I loose some length? I'm not averse to frogging entirely, I've heard people say circular yokes can be tricky to fit - maybe they're just not for me.
