Webinar: Reimagining Building Materials Strategies for Decarbonising the Construction Sector

The buildings and construction sector is by far the largest emitter of greenhouse gases, accounting for a staggering 37% of energy and process-related CO2 emissions globally. The production and use of materials such as cement, steel, and aluminum have a significant carbon footprint. According to the UNEP report “Building Materials And The Climate: Constructing A New Future”, building materials are set to dominate emissions and must be decarbonised. This webinar will highlight the importance of the three overarching strategies “Avoid-Shift-Improve” that need to be implemented together to decarbonise building materials. The webinar will also present the work of the GlobalABC Materials Hub on leading and supporting diverse actors across the circular value chain of the built environment in knowledge generation, dissemination, and implementation to apply the avoid-shift-improve framework to construction materials. In addition, the GlobalABC will invite its member Article 25 to present its project Collège Hampaté Bá in Niger and discuss lessons learnt, to showcase the opportunity for emerging economies to leapfrog current carbon-intensive building methods by shifting to alternative low-carbon building materials. Article 25’s project for Collège Hampaté Bá in Niger was conceived as an exemplar school design for the Sahel region. The classroom blocks are built using locally-sourced laterite stone as an affordable, low-carbon alternative to the ubiquitous cement blocks. Meanwhile the roof form, which is inspired by Francis Kéré, helps cool the interiors passively to create comfortable environments for teaching and learning in. In this webinar, the presenter will focus on the untapped potential for using laterite in the region, where it could drastically reduce the use of cement in mass house or school building programmes. Agenda: Introduction by Hanane, GlobalABC Secretariat (2min) Presentation on GlobalABC work and report on building materials by Mona, UNEP (10min) Presentation on project Collège Hampaté Bá in Niger by Toby, Article 25 (30min) Q&A, moderated by Mona, UNEP (15min)
