Splashin

Collecting fossilized shark teeth is always fun, but its not like there have been many innovations in techniques in the hunt to find a megalodon tooth. We walk around and surface collect first to see if we can spot one with our eyes. Sometimes we can just see them if we get lucky. Of course there is digging, and you see a lot of that on my channel. It doesn't get much more basic than sticking the shovel in the dirt and slinging the overburden aside until we spot a tooth. Then there is sifting also, where we shovel the material in a screen and then shake it in the water until only gravel remains and we can eyeball the fossils to pick them out. I started out by walking around picking up teeth and I noticed piles of loose material around the edges and I decided to splash those. I used my shovel to sling water at them and rinse away the surface sand to look for teeth that way. Its easier than sifting, plus I forgot my sifter anyway 🤣 and I wanted to save my back for digging the last part of the hunt. I ended up finding a bunch of teeth splashing, most of the stuff from today's video in fact. I would do that more often, but the conditions have to be right - there has to be enough water near a big pile of productive formation. Its opportunistic collecting at its finest.
