China - A Train Every Few Minutes (Pt.1), Sandaoling December 2016

We were very lucky during our recent visit to Sandaoling. Not only was the weather milder than the expected minus 20 (only minus 4 in the day) but coal production was at a high. This meant that, at times, trains were leaving the opencast mine every few minutes. This wasn't the case for the whole of our week at the site, but for a few days it was exceptionally busy. I've captured some of that time here - with another batch to follow soon. The JS Class 2-8-2's have plenty of spare pulling power to handle the loaded coal trains on the steep incline, but are limited by the adhesion they can manage on the poorly maintained track. Nevertheless, they put in a great performance and produce amazing sights and sounds, as their exhaust echoes around the opencast mine. This experience, the world's last example of genuine steam hard at work, is only to be available for a short time longer. It's expected that the operation will end for good some time in the first half of 2017. PS. This note added later .... they've been given a short reprise and are now expected to be working into 2018.
