Cowpeas for deer may just be the best food plot for deer that one can grow. Cowpeas, also known as iron clay peas or iron clay cowpeas, will draw deer into your hunting area and provide deer food throughout the summer months. A cowpea food plot will bring in deer and hold them through the summer as you head into the fall. The leafy forage of the cowpea sprouts new growth after deer nip off the tender leaves which makes them a perfect choice for heavy browsers like deer. This type of browsing can be devastating to other legumes such as soybeans (which deer love too!). Growing cowpeas is easy to do as they are very forgiving during the planting process. They can be planted anywhere from 1/4 inch to 2" deep. Their quick growth allows them to shade out other weeds in deer food plots which prevents the need for chemicals to control weeds. They are also very drought tolerant and provide good hydration that deer desperately need during the summer droughts. Cowpeas are a legume so it is important to inoculate the seed with the proper bacteria before planting so that the roots can properly affix nitrogen for strong healthy growth. In this video, I will show you what a 2 1/2 month old cowpea food plot looks like. When planting I simple sprayed the weeds and spread the seed in the same day. The next day, I harrowed them in with a one pass technique. It's a very simplified process compared to most. In the video you will see lots big deer, small deer, fawns, and does all enjoying these delicious cowpea food plots. A secret of many hunters (and a secret of mine!) is to throw some cowpea seed into your fall hunting plots because the deer love the little tender leaves until the first frost!
