CJI/PM Puja Absolutely Unforgivable, Undermines SC’s Integrity, is Forever a Stain on CJI Reputation

CJI inviting PM for puja was "absolutely unforgiveable", "it's undermined integrity of Supreme Court", CJI "lacked wisdom and courage" to prevent filming & it'll be "forever a stain on his personal reputation": Ramachandra Guha .......................................... In outspoken and hard-hitting criticism of the Chief Justice of India, one of the most highly regarded historians of modern India and a widely read political columnist has said the Chief Justice inviting the Prime Minister to his residence for Ganpati puja was “absolutely unforgiveable”. Ramachandra Guha said this has “undermined the integrity of the Supreme Court … and also diminished him and his office.” In a 25-minute interview to Karan Thapar for The Wire, Ramachandra Guha was particularly critical of the fact the Chief Justice permitted cameramen and photographers to record the Prime Minister’s presence at the puja and disseminate it widely. He said: “allowing such flagrant display of his closeness to the PM was shocking”. Prof. Guha said the Chief Justice “lacked the wisdom and courage” to politely object to the filming and prevent it happening. Prof. Guha said: “At the very least the Chief Justice should have had the courage to tell the cameraman not to film”. Prof. Guha said this will be “forever a stain on his (CJI’s) personal reputation.” In the interview, Ramachandra Guha compared the Chandrachud incident with the letter Justice Bhagwati wrote in 1980 congratulating Indira Gandhi on her re-election and also with Chief Justice Balakrishnan’s attendance at an Iftar party hosted by Dr. Manmohan Singh in 2009. I will leave you to watch the interview to find out what he said about these two incidents and how he believes they compare with the Chandrachud incident. In the interview, Ramachandra Guha also spoke at length about the ‘Restatement of Values of Judicial Life’, adopted by the Supreme Court in May 1997, and whether Chief Justice Chandrachud’s behaviour is a breach of the 1st and 16th principle/value listed in that Statement. Again, I will leave you to watch the interview to find out for yourself what Ramachandra Guha says. As you can see, I am only giving you the main points. There is a lot more in this interview that you must see for yourself. This is, therefore, not a precis or paraphrase of the full interview. It’s just a few abbreviated excerpts.
