It is a part of the Dinaric Alps and covers an area of 200 km2. Due to its climate and isolation, Tara National Park preserved ancient species of trees such as Pancic spruce and other almost fossil species of plants. The Serbian Spruce (Pančić Omorika) which is now protected in the small area of the park. It was discovered by Josif Pančić in 1875 in the Zaovine's hamlet of Đurići. Because of its rarity and scientific importance, it has been placed under national protection as it can only be found on two locations on Tara: the canyon of the Mileševka river and on the Zvezda massif. Oldest trees in the park are the beeches and in total there are 1,200 plant species in the park, of which 84 are Balkans endemites, and 600 species of fungi. There are two species of edelweiss which can be found in Serbia only on the Tara. Josif Pančić discovered the Derventa knapweed (Pančićeva Omorika) on the cliffs of the Derventa canyon, while Alpine edelweiss habitats only one ridge on Mokra Gora and is strictly protected. Another endemic is a common lady's mantle. Village Zaovine is made of 28 smaller villages on mountainous terrain covered with forest. There is Zaovine lake, small Spajići Lake, Perućac lake and a lot of small lakes. Taras length is 50 km, and it is 22 km wide, with an average height of 1200 m above sea level. The highest point is Kozji Rid -1591m and the lowest 291m is at the lake Perućac. Special value and importance of the Serbian Spruce (Panćić Omorika), endemic and relict species, which is inhabited canyons and ravines of the middle course of the Drina River managed to survive the last ice age. There are 53 species of mammals. The most interesting are bear, an on Tara is the largest population of brown bears in Serbia. There are 135 species of birds.. Throughout the Tara National Park, there are numerous archaeological sites and monuments dating from the Neolithic period to modern times. Most important are the Račа Monastery, оne of the most important centers of Serbian medieval literacy, and the necropolis with tombstones in Rastiste and Perucac, which are nominated for UNESCO World Heritage List. In forest sense, Tara National Park is covered with mixed forests of European Spruce, Silver Fir, and European Beech and there is a large number of relict and endemic forest species and plant communities. With 83.5% of the territory under forest, Nationa Park Tara is the most forested area of Serbia and thus nicknamed the "lungs of Serbia". Vrelo River is the strongest fountain in the national park, which runs into river Drina after 365 meters, and the Vrelo river is considered as the shortest river in Serbia, being only 365 m (1,198 ft) long, which is why it has been nicknamed the "Year". It ends with another attraction, an 8-meter-high (26 ft) Vrelo waterfall into the Drina, with a lookout and a restaurant above it. Tara National Park is a typical forest area and for its preservation and diversity of forest ecosystems one of the richest and most valuable forest areas in Europe. The main tourist points are Kaluđerske Bare on the north, close to Bajina Bašta, and Mitrovac on the south. Tara National Park can be reached from Bajina Bašta, from Perućac and from Kremna. The Drina gorge, which is an integral part of the park, can be toured by boat. Locally made items include woolen handicrafts, dairy products, juniper, and plum spirits and honey.
