2024 Ariens Art on Wheels VSCDA Sunday Elkhart Lake Cup Race at Road America

The Sunday Elkhart Lake Cup Race for open wheel cars at the Ariens Art on Wheels with VSCDA at Road America on September 15th, 2024. So this was an interesting cup race with cars from 10 different classes on track at the same time. I started second in the VFF class in the 1967 Lotus 51 with Roger Karnopp's #10 1972 Titan MK-6 next to me in first and Jeff Fritz's yellow #26 1972 Lola T204 right behind in third. In front of us were Dan Ariens in his #127 1977 Crossle 32F in class CF and Roberto Reina in the black/gold #272 1998 Van Diemen RF98 in class FF. Being the second race on Sunday afternoon a lot of cars opted to head home early, so with only 26 cars starting out of a potential grid of 67 we ended up with a lot of green flag racing and completed 11 laps. Fritz dropped out at turn 14 on Lap 2 (you can see him go off to the inside in my mirrors) and for the next 6 laps I'm basically the chase cam for the battle between Ariens, Karnopp and Reina (all in different classes but racing each other hard). I was working hard leveraging the draft to just keep in touch with these guys to see if there would be an opportunity to challenge Karnopp for 1st in VFF but it didn't seem likely until on lap 8 Karnopp had some issue that unfortunately put him into the right side wall at turn 5. By this time the footwell in the Lotus was incredibly hot as the air from the radiator was cooking my feet, so when I realized I now had first place in class and there was no way I was going to challenge Ariens and Reina's more modern Fords I eased off and brought the car home. Let me know in the comments what you think of the in-helmet Cambox footage compared to my regular GoPro footage. Since I was borrowing the Lotus from a friend I didn't want to stick GoPro mounts on it so I used a Cambox V4 Pro all weekend. You'll notice a couple of second gap in footage about every 5 minutes as the Cambox writes video from its memory buffer to the SD card, but I've since learned how to change that to write every 30 minutes so if I use it next year I shouldn't have the same problem.
