Today we will be learning Basic Expressions in Eʋe. Gbe sia gbe ƒe nyagbɔgblɔ aɖewo (Everyday Expressions in Eʋe Language) When you meet someone for the first time, or the person has travelled and has returned, you tell the person, Wòe zɔ – meaning You are welcome If the people are many, you say, Miawoe zɔ – which means, You (plural) are welcome. The person or they will respond, Yoo – which simply means, thank you. If you want ask of the person’s name, you say, Ŋkɔwò ɖe? meaning, what is your name? The person responds, Ŋkɔnyee nye …. Meaning, my name is … (it is wrong nye ŋkɔe nye… it is a wrong construction) If you want to know where the person comes from, you ask, Afi ka nètso? Meaning, where do you come from? The person responds, Metso Klikɔ. Meaning, I come from Klikɔ. If you want to ask for water, you say, Meɖe kuku, na tsim mano. Meaning, please, give me water to drink (It is wrong to say, meɖe kuku, nam tsi mano) If you thirst for water, you say, Tsikɔ le wuem. Meaning, I am thirsty. (It is wrong to say, Tsikɔ le nye wum) If you want to complain of hunger, you say, Dɔ le wuem. Meaning, I am hungry (It is wrong to say, Dɔ le nye wum) If you want to say you are eating, you say, Mele nu ɖum. Meaning, I am eating. If you want to you say you are full, you say Meɖi ƒo or Meɖi ƒodo. Meaning I am full. If you want to express that you are not well, you say Nye lãme mele kɔkɔm o / Mele dɔ lém. Meaning, I am not feeling well/ I am sick. If it’s your head, you say Ta le ɖuem. Meaning, my head aches. If it’s your stomach, you say, Dɔ me le ɖuem. My stomach aches.
