At the film's outset, Narisinh (Vishnupant Pagnis), along with his faithful wife Manekbai (Durga Khote), eke out a tenuous existence as outcasts in a tumble down hut in the jungle. Narisinh's poems, which are deplored by Brahmin conservatives, describe in vivid detail the plight of the untouchables and praise the virtues of Krishna in both erotic and in spiritual terms. As the film progresses, Narisinh is persecuted by his own brother Sarangadhar (Pande) for his divergent beliefs.
