🎉 It’s finally here! We are asked all the time what living in East Fort Garry and Wildwood Park is like, and today we've decided to debut our new series, Want to be Our Neighbour? focusing on this neighbourhood. 🙌 There’s a lot going on in this one... We share information about what living within the neighbourhood is like - this includes types of homes, school districts, shopping, recreation, entertainment, lifestyle. We hope you enjoy this labour of love. Housing Construction Development within this community was quite heavy in the 40’s and 50’s – with a lot of the draw to the community as a result of its proximity to the downtown core. As a result of the era of construction, the majority of the homes are single family homes, with bungalows and two-storeys being the dominant housing type within the area. You will also find some newer construction and infill within the area too. The lot sizes here can be quite large, so it isn’t uncommon to see an older home being demolished with a more substantial home erected in its place. There are also more condominium developments going up within the area – including some high-rises tucked along the quiet streets within the community, as well as those closer to Pembina. What I love about the community: Community members enjoy the tucked away component of living in this area. Once you get off of Pembina, and into the tree-lined streets of the area, it feels like you are far away from it all. Yet you are close to everything and also enjoy the accessibility via Pembina Highway to destinations both North (toward the downtown core) and South (to the University of Manitoba) from the area. Location/Borders: East Fort Garry is a small pocket of homes, east of Pembina highway that is bordered by Jubilee to the north, and the Red River along the east and south. The area is about 12 kilometers from the Winnipeg Airport and about 7 kilometers from the downtown core. It is also about 4 kilometers from the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry Campus. East Fort Garry also encompasses the highly sought-after neighbourhood of Wildwood. Wildwood Park is a suburban community that has a central green space and no front roads (only back alleys), with communal walkways, playgrounds and parks. Nearly all of the original houses are based on five variations of three basic designs, pre-fabricated in one section of the site. The site plan concept is based on the Radburn community design of architects Henry Wright and Clarence Stein who advocated the idea of designing neighbourhoods for the "motor age". Schools and Services This community’s schools are managed by the Pembina Trails School Division. Given the size of the area, there are actually a substantial amount of schools within the borders of this community. See video for catchments. This area also plays home to the prestigious St. John's Ravenscourt School. Services/Entertainment I would be missing a huge opportunity if I didn’t talk about Thermea Spa, which is a Scandinavian inspired Nordik Spa. It truly is a slice of paradise offering thermal pools (including a cold plunge), Finnish saunas, steam baths, and spa treatments. It is located on Crescent Drive. Also, if you are looking to improve upon your short game, the area plays home to a Public Golf Course known as Crescent Drive Golf Course. This is a smaller course offering 9 holes, all par-3 and offers a beautiful backdrop for your game. There is also a private golf course housed within the area – Wildewood Golf Course located on North Drive which is a semi-private, 9-hole golf course that is setback nicely within the area along the tree lines of Fort Garry forest. Adjacent to Wildewood Golf Course is the Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club. Shopping Pembina is lined with many stores ranging in size from mom-and-pop style shops to large big-box retailers and larger grocery chain stores. The area is also within a 10-minute drive to the Kenaston area that offers a luxury outlet mall, Ikea, Costco, large grocers as well as big-box home renovation retailers.
