When I first heard this song last year, I knew I had found a new favourite. As I listened to those 5 minutes over and over again, I fell in love with it, discovering a new aspect every single time. Taking 5 Hindustani classical ragas, each one unique in it’s own right, and weaving them into a seamless but extremely intricate melody, is a feat not many can achieve. Coupled with Ga Di Madgulkarji's poetic prowess and Ashaji’s soul-stirring voice, a masterpiece was born… “जीवलगा! कधी रे येशील तू?” On the occasion of Shri. Sudhir Phadke ji a.k.a Babuji's 101st birth anniversary, it is my humble attempt to pay tribute to the musical genius, while hoping that the decades of efforts put in by these maestros do not go away in vain because our ‘cool next gen' was so busy westernizing that it failed to recognise it’s actual roots and heritage.
