The 1959 Candidates’ tournament, a 28-round(!) quadruple all-play-all held to determine the next challenger to World Champion Mikhail Botvinnik, lasted from 7th September until 29th October. The event was held in Yugoslavia, a nation that already by 1959 had a phenomenal chess tradition and in which the game was extremely popular. The first 14 rounds were held in Bled, in the republic of Slovenia. Then play switched to the Croatian capital Zagreb for rounds 15-21, and the event finished in Belgrade, capital of the Serbian republic and of the Yugoslav federation as a whole. The event is best remembered in chess history for the role it played in Mikhail Tal’s meteoric ascent to the World Championship, and for the appearance of 16-year-old Bobby Fischer. Tal did not have it easy, however; the early lead was taken by Paul Keres. However, by the time play moved to Belgrade Tal had opened up a 1½-point lead over his rival, he held the lead until the end. PAUL KERES vs ROBERT FISCHER FIDE CANDIDATES YUGOSLAVIA 1959
