S. KOREA-JAPAN TIES UNDER YOON AND ISHIBA

한일관계 외신 전망 Speaking on the sidelines of this year's ASEAN-related summits in Laos President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba pledged to promote bilateral trade partnership and security interests. Their intentions were covered by the foreign media including Japanese newspapers. We have more on Press Perspective today. Hope your workweek is off to a good start. You're watching Press Perspective for this Monday October 14th here in South Korea. I'm Min Sunhee. Today our PANEL consisting of a member of the Japanese media and a pundit on international relations TOUCHES upon prospects of South Korea's ties with neighboring Japan where a new leadership entered office at the start of this month. For this I have Koichi Yonemura the deputy foreign news editor at Japanese daily The Mainichi live on the line. Koichi it's a pleasure. I also have Doctor Ban Kil-joo at Ilmin International Relations Institute with us. Doctor Ban welcome. 1) Koichi, let's begin with details about The Mainichi's coverage of the summit between South Korea and Japan in Laos last week. 2) And Dr. Ban, as a pundit on international relations, what were your takeaways from the summit between President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba? 3) Koichi, some believe the historical divide between South Korea and Japan can be bridged under the Ishiba administration given his "progressive views on thorny historical issues". Do you agree? 4) Koichi, how does Prime Minister Ishiba's stance on Japan's colonial history look to affect his approval rating at home ? 5) Dr. Ban, how does reconciliation over historical matters look to affect bilateral security initiatives especially in light of China's assertive posture and North Korea's aggressive stance amid its military pact with Russia? 6) Koichi, do you believe the Ishiba administration will push for a regional security mechanism amid the geopolitical uncertainties worldwide? 7) Dr. Ban, again speaking within your capacity as a scholar, what are your thoughts on the formation of an Asian NATO, and should South Korea support such an initiative? 8) Meanwhile, Koichi, President Yoon Suk Yeol, for his part, has been praised for his persistent efforts to enhance Seoul-Tokyo ties. Speaking as a member of the Japanese press, what are your thoughts on the Yoon administration's commitment to promoting partnership with Japan? 9) Dr. Ban, beyond security, what are the economic gains for both South Korea and Japan in light of stronger diplomatic relations? 10) Koichi, beyond security and trade, do you believe soft power in the form of music, movies, dramas, books and more will continue to keep bilateral ties on track as the two countries look to celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations next year? And that is all the time we have for this Monday's edition of Press Perspective. We return same time tomorrow that is Tuesday so do join us then. Thank you for now.
