Mission 10 Forward Observation July 1919 Near Howell, New Jersey The Martian invaders had taken root in the New Jersey countryside, a grim reflection of their earlier conquests. It seemed their strategy was one of slow encroachment, their ominous tentacles reaching out like shadowy fingers across the land. From their newly established base, the Martians dispatched scouts in peculiar flying machines, surveying the terrain and the remnants of a battered humanity. Reports from the few human reconnaissance flights that have successfully returned are bleak. The Martians, it appears, have dug in, fortifying their position with a cold, mechanical precision. They have begun to strip the surrounding area of its resources, drawing what they can from the Earth like some parasitic invader. There is a dreadful certainty among the underground resistance: once the land has been stripped bare, the Martians will move on, leaving only scorched earth in their wake. In the shadows, the local human resistance—an ever-dwindling number of brave souls—works feverishly to evacuate the remaining population from the occupied zones. Each survivor who escapes brings with them tales of unimaginable horrors, further fueling the resolve of the resistance. They speak of new Martian machines: small, unnerving “baby” motherships that have descended to resupply the invaders, and with them, a disturbing array of new technologies. Among the most terrifying are the small flying saucers, seemingly piloted by the diminutive Tripods. There is an unsettling silence that accompanies these machines, a prelude to the unknown. What are the capabilities of these new flying ships? None can say for certain. But one thing remains clear: whatever their purpose, the Martians will not hesitate to use them, and more human lives will surely be lost in the pursuit of knowledge. The only question that lingers, chilling the bones of even the bravest, is how many more must perish before humanity understands the true nature of these new Martian contraptions.
