2002 Regina 250cc Pro Moto #2 (Jean-Sebastien Roy Vs. Blair Morgan #2)

This is the 2nd 250cc Pro moto from the 2002 Regina Motocross National. In 2002, Blackfoot Honda's Jean-Sebastien Roy #1 came into the final round of the Western swing of the 250cc Pro Canadian Motocross Championship with a good-sized 16-point lead over his Blackfoot Honda teammate Blair Morgan #2. The series began at Nanaimo where Team Kawasaki's Darcy Lange #3 swept both motos, but Lange was scratched from the series when he crashed in practice at the next round at Kamloops and sustained a back injury; Lange wouldn't return until the 7th round at Ste. Julie. JSR had won the overall at Kamloops with a 1-3; initially, Roy had swept the motos, but he was docked 2 positions and 5 pts. for passing Diablo Honda's Marco Dube #6 under a yellow flag area. Roy and Morgan swapped moto wins at the last round in Calgary, but Morgan walked away with the overall with his 2-1 to Roy's 1-2. J.S. Roy had won 2 of the 7 motos coming into this last moto at Regina, and finished 2nd in the first moto behind Blair Morgan (in Blair's home province). In this moto, Blair Morgan got out to the holeshot with JSR back around 10th. Blair held the lead and was unchallenged until the closing portion of the moto. Marco Dube hung with Blair, but Jean-Sebastien Roy was coming like a freight train. Towards the end of the moto, JSR caught Morgan and passed him, but Morgan responded back with a brake check of his own on JSR. Roy hung around and still challenged Morgan until Jean-Sebastien passed him again and started pulling a gap, en route to his 3rd moto win of the season, and his 2nd overall win of the season. Roy and Morgan engaged in several titanic battles throughout the season. Morgan would take the win in the single moto at the next round in Jolliette after the 2nd moto was called off due to severe rain and lightning. Jean-Sebastien Roy caught fire with 4 straight moto wins at Pleasant Valley and Ste. Julie while Morgan faltered with crashes in 3 of those 4 motos that Roy ran away with. After a 2-2 at Pleasant Valley for Morgan, he faltered to an 8-3 at Ste. Julie to give Roy a 33-point lead going into the final round at Walton. Morgan would win the last race of the season with a 1-2, which would later turn out to be the last win of Blair's career. JSR secured the championship with a dominating 2nd moto win after a 6th in the first moto at Walton. As for JSR, he had successfully defended his championship from 2001; it was the 2nd of 5 straight titles for JSR on his Blackfoot Honda CR250R from 2001-2005. JSR went virtually unchallenged for the rest of his championships until his future Blackfoot Honda teammate Dusty Klatt beat JSR for the 2006 450cc MX title after JSR and Klatt both jumped up to 450cc 4-strokes, along with the rest of the field. After Blackfoot picked up a new sponsor in Toyota, which resulted in a switch to Yamaha for 2007 after a 6-year relationship with Honda, Jean-Sebastien Roy finished 5th overall in 2007, despite missing 2 races. JSR called it a career, but he came out for the final round of the 2008 season at Walton aboard a YZ250 2-stroke and finished with a 7th in moto 1; as for Blair Morgan, a paralyzing injury in 2009 ended his career too soon. Enjoy.
