How To Make a DIY Furnace in Under 30 Minutes

How to build an aluminum foundry: in this video we build a metal casting furnace in under 30 minutes. This simple backyard furnace is perfect for aluminum casting and making metal parts. It’s composed of refractory bricks, a metal pipe, a shop vac blower, some rebar, and a top made of refractory cement or a 50% plaster of paris / 50% play sand mix. This is a charcoal foundry, so you’ll need some coal for fuel and preferably some lighter fluid to get it started. You’ll also need some steel tongs, heat resistant safety gloves, and a graphite crucible. We’ve mainly used this homemade furnace for melting cans to cast aluminum ingots and castings, however, we’ve had the furnace approach the melting point of silver, so you may be able to use it for smelting other metals. Where you can buy the tools and materials: [✓] Refractory Bricks / Fire Bricks – check out a local building supply store for buying these https://www.google.com/maps/search/bu... [✓] Amprobe High Temp Infrared Thermometer (optional) http://amzn.to/2uc39Vh [✓] Heat Resistant Safety Melting Furnace Gloves http://amzn.to/2wtvhAa [✓] Crucible Tongs http://amzn.to/2ffuQpM [✓] Graphite Crucible http://amzn.to/2v57l84 [✓] Muffin Tin (the mold for making ingots) http://amzn.to/2vqgzNd [✓] Rebar (for the holder) http://www.homedepot.com/p/3-8-in-x-1... [✓] Handles http://www.homedepot.com/s/drawer%252... [✓] Pipe Nipple http://amzn.to/2vcFU9a [✓] Pipe Coupling http://amzn.to/2fX27qd [✓] Refractory Cement (for the lid) http://amzn.to/2fghXM2 OR - [✓] Plaster of Paris (for the lid) http://amzn.to/2v4XRdn [✓] Play Sand (for the lid) http://amzn.to/2hwju16 Safety Warning: This is a 1700°+ degree furnace (Fahrenheit), meaning it gets extremely hot and you need to be careful. Wear your heat resistant gloves at all times and only handle the crucible with the tongs. The handles atop the furnace get very hot, so DO NOT touch them with your bare hands once the furnace is burning. Keep the furnace away from anything flammable as it will spit out some sparks. Cleaning: After using the homemade foundry a few times, you’ll get a buildup of charcoal dust. The easiest way to clean it is just to shop vac up the dust and empty out the shop vac so you don’t have to move or take apart the furnace. In a future video we’ll have more on how to melt aluminum and make homemade castings. Until then -have fun with your new metal foundry!
