BOULIA: Where History & Mystery Collide | The Land of the Min Min Light

“Keep smiling, because life is a beautiful thing and there’s so much to smile about.” — Marilyn Monroe Our 192km venture from Bedourie to Boulia showcased the rugged and picturesque arid beauty of far west Queensland. We took a short detour via a steep road to Vaughan Johnson Lookout, fondly known as ‘the loo with a view’, where we marvelled at the fantastic panoramic views from the top. Next was a very brief stop to get a quick pic of the Tropic of Capricorn marker. As we journeyed, we watched the scenery changes until we stopped to admire another stand of protected Waddi Trees (that means there is only one site left for us to discover). We finally reached our destination on the banks of the Bourke River and spent 3-nights unwinding at the beautiful Boulia Caravan Park. Boulia is a town with many feathers in its cap – It is the Land of the Min Min Light, Capital of the Channel Country and big sky country. The town’s origins date back to 1876 and of course you can ‘see the light’ for yourself and learn about the phenomenon at the Min Min Encounter and Visitor Information Centre. More than 100million years ago, Boulia was once part of Australia’s inland sea and a visit to the Boulia Heritage Centre showcases an extensive marine fossil display. The museum also houses Stonehenge Cottage and an array of historical artefacts from early settlers, including machinery + an interesting display of space junk! Other attractions around town include: The Water Tank and Windmill Red Stump Boulia Racecourse (very quiet when we were there) Boulia is the BEST, be sure to put it on your list! Time to hit the road!
