From the Vault: W+F Bern P47 Pistol Prototype

Steve and Keith are back at "The Rock" - Rock Island Auction Company. Combing the recent auction lots, they found another extreme rarity. It's one of only 10 P47 prototypes built by Waffenfabrik Bern (W+F Bern) for the Swiss Army trials in the late 1940s seeking to replace the Lugers then in service. The army wanted something simpler, less expensive, easier to maintain, and more up-to-date than the complex Luger, yet still chambered in 9mm Parabellum. The Waffenfabrik Bern P47 is a clean, compact, elegant design with a gas-delayed blowback operating system, which helps contribute to the gun's small size. There is a gas piston under the barrel, much like the Heckler & Koch P7, that keeps the action closed until the bullet exits the muzzle. The slide is then free to move rearwards (there are no locking lugs), and the action cycles. Displaying Swiss-watch precision of fit and finish, the all-steel P47 sits comfortably and naturally in the hand. It has a simple frame-mounted thumb safety, but it's not a hammer-drop safety. The fixed rear sight is integral to the slide, and the front sight is adjustable for windage. There's the customary European-type magazine release in the heel of the grip for the single-stack 8-round mag. The slide will lock back on the mag after the last round is fired. There is no slide release lever, so you get the gun back into battery from slide lock with a tug on the back of the slide. Steve likes the feel of the smooth, wide trigger, which is similar to a Smith & Wesson target revolver trigger minus the vertical serrations. Despite the expense and effort W+F Bern put into developing the beautifully made P47, the eventual winner of the army trials was the SIG P49, famous for its commercial version, the P210. There's no shame in losing out to one of the greatest handguns of all time! Keith calls the SIG P210 the "Rolls Royce of pistols." Maybe that makes the P47 the "Aston Martin"?
