PipesandCigars.com explains the best way to pack your pipe. How to Pack a Bowl There are probably 100 methods for packing a pipe, but there are only two principles that are vital for any method to work. 1. The tobacco at the bottom of the bowl has to allow for free airflow; and 2. The tobacco at the top has to be packed firmly enough to stay lit. We will limit instruction to the tried and true “3 layer” method. You will need: a pipe, pipe tobacco, a tamper, and matches or a soft flame butane lighter. Start by sprinkling loose tobacco into the bowl until it mounds up over the top. Next, press the tobacco down until it’s compressed down to the halfway point. Repeat sprinkling the tobacco and then pack it down to the 2/3 to 3/4 level. Finally, repeat sprinkling the tobacco one last time and pack it down till it’s just below the rim of the bowl. At this point, take a draw on the stem. If the draw has a similar resistance to sucking soda through a straw, you've done it correctly. If it feels like an empty straw, you've packed to loosely; if it feels like a thick milkshake, it’s packed too tight. Circulate a soft lighter or match around the top of the tobacco, while using a firm, steady puff. Do not use a torch lighter. Torch lighters burn too hot and will crack the bowl. The tobacco will rise up during this initial lighting causing the pipe to go out. This is called a “charring light.” Re-tamp your tobacco lightly and re-light. The pipe should stay lit with minimal effort. When the draw loosens up, and it will, lightly tamp the tobacco to keep the pipe going.
