Yes, depression happens in Africa | Mildred Apenyo | TEDxNakaseroWomen

Mildred dispels the common thinking among her peers that Depression is so “Un-African” In this talk she reveals how unrealistic you may be branded if you ever mentioned being depressed; yet many continue to suffer silently. We can all do something about it! Mildred Apenyo is a writer and human rights activist with a passion for the safety and wellness of Africa’s women. In 2014 she started FitcliqueAfrica (formerly known as Fitclique256), a social enterprise that opens exclusively women’s gyms, organizes wellness events and creates personal safety curricula for girls and women. FitcliqueAfrica has received the coverage of media houses such as AlJazeera, BBC, Daily Monitor, VOA and NTV for the work it is doing in the fight against shame, body hatred, abuse and other ills of the patriarchy. She writes a column for the Sunday Vision. Mildred was one of the 500 chosen to be part of the inaugural class of the Mandela Washington Fellowship of Young African Leaders in 2014. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
