California Section H (Crabtree Meadows to Tuolumne Meadows) is 175 miles. May 24 - June 4, 2021 175 miles in 9 days with 35,000 feet in overall elevation gain made for our longest and most difficult carry yet. At 3 pounds, the additional weight of our bear can on top of 9 days of food felt like a handful of salt in a gaping wound. Most hikers choose to resupply at one or both of the exit points along the way, resulting in a lighter pack over the steep summits. We don’t regret our decision to tackle this section the way we did. We spent 9 secluded days in some of the most beautiful scenery I have ever seen, seeing maybe 10 people the entire section after Mt Whitney. No cell service, no vehicles, no easy way in or out. The High Sierra strengthened us, but it also humbled us. It filled us with tears of joy and tears of frustration. We experienced conflicting emotions with almost every step. We learned to embrace the discomfort, the exhaustion, the happiness, the wonder as they all came in waves. We look forward to what the next section of this journey holds, but we will never forget the beauty of solitude and struggle that the High Sierra showcased over this past 9 days. The next couple of days after a double zero in Mammoth felt strange for us. We had so much anticipation for so long about the desert, and then that anticipation was reallocated to the High Sierra. Mile 903 felt like the end, but in reality we have so much further to go still. So we walked through this beautiful new terrain, a feast for the mosquitoes, and found ourselves having to mentally recalibrate a bit. Still incredible, still a long ways to go. Also, we finally got our first bear!
