After last week's aerial test on a 6' pole in the ground giving us 3-4 miles OK range & 'just copy' at 6 miles, I had a comment about a horizontal dipole which I instantly dismissed as aerial polarisation for CB is vertical. It struck me that a horizintal dipole could work the same or better than last week's experimemt despite being the wrong polarisation. This could be disguised as a clothes line for peoplee in areas where external aerials are not permitted. So I built two half-wave dipoles & SWR was OK without any external matcher or whatever. Given time the SWR would have been 1.3:1, but I left them around 1.8:1 for the experiment. One was horizontal, one was vertical (as it should be). I had both on a 2-way aerial switch. Interesting result. Up to scratchy corner, the horizonal one worked better because of less noise. After 3.5 miles the verical aerial was better as expected. The conclusion is the horizontal aerial worked marginally better than last week's 6' pole in the ground with a mobile aerial & having to use a counterpoise wire & a matcher, thus making this far cheaper & very easy to SWR.
