Many fans of the Carry-On films consider Charles Hawtrey to be one of the outstanding members of the cast, this curious little man in goggle glasses with a thin quirky look – often receiving third billing, with only Sid James and Kenneth Williams in front of him – but was it enough for Charles? In this video we will explore Charles Hawtrey’s beginnings as a child star of the silent era, a performer in Revue, and a regular in the popular Will Hay films but what really happened to this extraordinary actor – how did he go from working closely with Vivien Leigh the wife of Sir Laurence Olivier - to becoming a belligerent recluse in Deal on the Kent coast, where his jolly high camp flamboyant personality gave way to resentment and alcoholism. I take flowers to Mortlake Crematorium the final resting place of Charles Hawtrey who was scattered on the rose bed - and we will take a walk through his life to discover more about the man with an unusual style of comedy brilliance built on a foundation of talent, ego, eccentricity, and notoriety.
