The biggest mistake tourists make is spending too much time driving around. D.C. traffic is infuriating especially during rush hour between 7 and 10 and 2 and 7. Therefore, use the Metro especially for commuting long distances between your hotel and attractions. Another mistake is to only consider staying downtown around the Verizon Center, Convention Center, or Union Station. Between expensive rates and high parking fees downtown hotels aren’t budget friendly. That's why many visitors take advantage of hotels on the metro lines just outside D.C. city limits in Maryland and Virginia. For tourists that want the best location for the National Mall, look for hotels near the L'enfant station two blocks from the Air and Space Museum. Families will like the nearby Holiday Inn for its rooftop pool. Tourists that want more to do around their hotel should consider Woodley Park and Dupont Circle. These charming urban neighborhoods are just north of downtown along the red line. Walk to the National Zoo from Woodley Park while staying at the Omni, or find a trendy hotel in Dupont Circle steps away from bars and restaurants. Families coming to D.C. that want a modest hotel with free parking should look at options near the Branch Ave. Metro station in suburban Maryland, or staying near the Eisenhower station in Alexandria Virginia. Families may also like Arlington, and one of the best options for a hotel is the Residence Inn two blocks from the Ballston station. Another hidden gem for families is the River Inn. This hotel is situated near George Washington University at the Foggy-Bottom Metro station in D.C. Couples coming to D.C. for a getaway should prioritize Rosslyn in Arlington. Hotels like the Le Meridien offer a sweeping view of the city, just like the show House of Cards. Georgetown is a short walk over the Key Bridge and the commute to DCA is under 15 minutes.
