From the age of 23 as a Second Lieutenant in the Nigerian Army in 1966 till he rose to the rank of General in the same army, Abacha took part in the dangerous adventure of planning and execution of coups. Not one, not two but many coups. In all these, he was never caught for once. This was unprecedented in the history of coup plotting in Africa; not many people could do it twice and still be alive to plan another.
