Counting the fin rays and spines in the pectoral, dorsal and anal fins is a beneficial skill for fishers referencing their fish ID guides. We'll focus on the genus Lepomis but these counting methods are applicable to all sunfishes (centrarchids) and many other groups of fishes. (Not applicable to Cypriniformes like carps and minnows and some other fish orders/families.) I'll count the dorsal spines, dorsal rays, pectoral rays, anal spines and anal rays in a green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) for your reference.
