Sorabji: "XI. Fuga IV [Dux Quartus]" from Opus Clavicembalisticum (Eric Xi Xin Liang, Multi-Track)

Recorded on May 26th, 2023. Performed by me, multi-track synchronized. [0:00] Subject 4 introduction [0:24] Integration with 3 previous subjects [3:44] Reversed subject introduction [5:36] Inversed subject introduction [7:31] Reversed & inversed subject introduction [9:25] Stretto of subject 4 3rd of this kind of recording I've done. Haha this worked out better than I expected. This was more difficult to synchronize because of the 16th note and 32th note sequences. I had to be outrageously precise. I'm actually extremely glad I'm just taking the time to render this fugue like this, because learning it would be tougher than "XII. Coda-Stretta" and, from my predictions, it'll sound less pleasant, so overall not worth the effort. It's fugues like this that the multi-track synchronization approach is apparent more useful. Clearly, this would be very challenging to play because many of the notes must be shared between the hands to avoid arpeggiation. However, it's clear that because groups of voices of recorded independently, it's impossible to create consistent tonal colouring, which is what this isn't as great with. But, I suppose that's just a testament to my other work of OC: contrast to show just how much tonal colouring I was able to bring out in the other movements, something that people might take for granted without realizing. But then, think about it even further: the other existing recordings of this have lower accuracy, lower contrapuntal clarity, lower clarity in general, and even less tonal colouring. If this version is almost perfectly note accurate and it's still so dissonant, then what are you even listening to in the other recordings?? Random thrashing? (Yes, I've come to realize Sorabji's fugues don't sound all that pleasant and are largely atonal, but the way to appreciate this is simply to focus on the key contrapuntal material, like the subjects and counter-subjects. Do not think of harmonies. Think of levels of tension induced by certain intervals. Despite this though, yes, they are not that great sounding, but there's definitely some incredible moments. Falls far from the other more dynamic movements I've recorded.)
