Time Lapse of Restoration project: the River Lyvennet at Barnskew

At some time in the past 200-300 years, The River Lyvennet at Barnskew had been staightened, resulting in a shorter and steeper river than originally flowed there. This meant that there was little variety of wildlife to be found in this part of the river. This project aimed to bring the river back to a more natural state, re-introducing meanders that would slow the flow of the water, reducing erosion and the amount of the sediment in the river, leading to a larger wildlife habitat, attracting more varieties of wildlife, a reduction in flood risk, and improved water quality. For farmers, the re-meandering meant that the river banks were more stable - reducing erosion of their land, the surrounding land was drier and less prone to flooding - good for health of livestock, and they were able to access finanical support. Part of the Cumbrian River Restoration Strategy delivered by the Environment Agency, Natural England, Eden Rivers Trust, West Cumbria Rivers Trust and South Cumbria Rivers Trust.
