Purana Qila: The Historic Gem of Delhi Delhi is a city steeped in history, surrounded by Mughal architecture. But amidst these grand monuments stands a fort that predates the Mughal era, built nearly 500 years ago by Sher Shah Suri of the Suri dynasty. According to Hindu literature, this fort is located at Indraprastha, the ancient capital of the Pandavas. The history of Purana Qila is also closely tied to Mughal emperor Humayun. It is said that Humayun's tragic death occurred when he fell down the steps of this very fort. The fort has three magnificent gates, including the grand gate to the west and Humayun's gate to the south. Historical Significance of Purana Qila Purana Qila, also known as "Sher Shah's Fort," is one of Delhi's oldest forts, holding many stories from the past. It is a popular spot among tourists and locals alike. The evening light and sound show here is a special attraction, drawing visitors from all over Delhi and NCR. The fort covers an area of approximately 2 kilometers and is rectangular in shape. It is considered Delhi's largest and oldest fort, which is why it is called "Purana Qila." Its original name was "Shergarh," named after its creator, Sher Shah Suri. Legends Linked to the Mahabharata Near Purana Qila lies the temple of Kunti Devi, which is also linked to ancient legends. It is believed that when the Pandavas came here, Kunti built a temple at this location. Based on this belief, Purana Qila is also associated with the Mahabharata, being referred to as the Pandavas' fort. From Mughal Era to Present Day According to historical tales, after Humayun's death on the steps of this fort, the Mughals considered it inauspicious and left it. Later, Emperor Akbar moved the capital to Delhi and constructed the Red Fort to protect the city from foreign invasions.
