The Shallow Pond: Would You Save a Drowning Child?

In this beautifully illustrated video, ethical philosopher Peter Singer (co-founder of The Life You Can Save) walks us through his famous thought experiment, The Shallow Pond. It’s a simple exercise that exposes how our assumed moral priorities are not necessarily the guideposts by which we’re navigating our lives. It’s probably what you just thought. Alright, then. But what if you happened to be wearing your best and most expensive pair of shoes? You don’t have time to take them off, but they’ll certainly be ruined as you wade into that muddy, knee-deep water. Would you still choose to intervene? ‘Of course,’ you think. ‘Only a monster would prioritise the cost of a pair of shoes over the life of a child…’ And yet millions of children die every year from preventable illnesses. Often, all it takes to save one of them is the equivalent cost of an everyday luxury. When we choose to spend more money than we need to on our clothes, cars and other non-essentials, rather than donating to effective charities, are we any better than the person who would walk right past the child in that shallow pond? Not sure how to give effectively? View our list of evidence-based charities here: https://www.thelifeyoucansave.org/. ________ The Life You Can Save: The Life You Can Save makes smart giving simple. We curate a group of nonprofits that save or improve the most lives per dollar. We aim to create a world in which everyone has the opportunity to build a better life and where suffering and premature death are no longer simply a feature of low economic status. We provide tools that make it easy for people to make smart donations. These include a curated list of evidence-based charities, in-depth reports on their impact, and a calculator that helps donors see how far their dollars can go in a developing country. ________ Connect with The Life You Can Save: Facebook:   / thelifeyoucansave   Twitter:   / lifeyoucansave   LinkedIn:   / the-life-you-can-save   #TheShallowPond #PeterSinger #Charity #Giving #Motivation #Philanthropy #SocialImpact
