Tujia Folk Song

The Tujia are an ethnic minority in China that had a subsistence culture along the Yangtze River, on Shennong Stream in particular. Stream? Well it used to be a fast moving stream 1-2 meters deep where they made a living fishing, boating, and boat tracking (pulling boats upstream). The men who pulled the boats were called the HuaJie. This is a folk song about them. One Tujia told me, "When we can speak, we can sing. When we can walk, we can dance. When we can drink water, we can drink beer!" Far from being ruined by the Three Gorges Dam project which has turned their 1-2 meter stream into a 75 meter deep lake, these folks have embraced the assistance given them by the Chinese government and transformed themselves into a river based tourist culture, and they seem to be enjoying the improvements in their lifestyle. Many, many changes for them, but some things remain the same. This woman "Linda" wanted to sing with us, because in her world, "Nobody will marry a woman who cannot sing". So we sang ... sad little Westerners doing our best.
