Quantifying an Inconvenient Truth Webinar 17 Sept 2024

Launch Webinar hosted by the ITF Seafarers’ Trust and the World Maritime University. In a culture where falsification of Hours of Work/Rest records is endemic, a huge gulf has developed in terms of the working/resting hours expectations of people working at sea versus people working on shore. This research report demonstrates that the system is broken - bad for health and wellbeing of seafarers, bad for occupational safety and bad for accident prevention. Our expert panel discuss the impact of a working culture which promotes worker fatigue, undermines national and international regulatory regimes, and compromises the safety of life at sea – an essential conversation for all those involved in the maritime sector. Moderator: Richard Meade, Editor-in-Chief, Lloyds List Panellists: Prof./Capt. Raphael Baumler, Professor, Head of Maritime Safety and Environmental Administration, WMU Capt. Bikram S. Bhatia, Doctoral Researcher, WMU Beatriz Vacotto, Head of the Maritime Unit. International Labour Standards Department, International Maritime Organization (ILO) Dr. Michelle Grech, Manager Vessel Operations, Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) Lianne van der Veen, Chair of MAIIF and Senior Marine Accident Investigator at the Netherlands Safety Board, Marine Accident Investigators' International Forum (MAIIF) Dr. Ismael Cobos Delgado, Deputy Director, Subdivision for Operational Safety and Human Element, Maritime Safety Division, International Maritime Organization (IMO) Read the full reports online at: Quantifying an inconvenient truth : revisiting a culture of adjustment on work/rest hours https://commons.wmu.se/lib_reports/80/ A culture of adjustment : evaluating the implementation of the current maritime regulatory framework on rest and work hours: https://commons.wmu.se/lib_reports/66/
