The video starts off by explaining the critical nature of data quality or IT enterprise. Since COBIT 5 is the definitive IT Governance Framework for the vast majority of medium to large businesses, we start from there, highlighting how poor data quality impacts the effectiveness of IT. The remaining part of the video covers 3 key steps in improving the quality of your configuration management data: Step 1: Identify who will be using the data and what they need it for. This will help you focus on your effort in the right areas. Step 2: Work out the data quality metrics for each use case. The attributes you need to capture for each use case include: • Completeness: Does the data describe everything you need to know • Validity: Integrity and traceability of data • Accuracy: The degree to which the data reflects the object • Consistency: Is the asset described in the same way across multiple sources • Availability: The level of access required to the data • Timeliness: Expected availability of the data when it needed Step 3: Now benchmark the CMDB against these attributes and work out a data improvement programme. Your plan will cover these 4 scenarios: • Data is in CMDB and the source. This is great. Nothing more to do. • Data is in CMDB but not in source. This could be due to manually added records or integration failures. • Data not in CMDB, but in data source. Usually related to discovery or integration issues. May also be due to data source being updated manually. • Data not in CMDB and not in data source. The unknown unknown or Shadow IT.
