City of Savannah officials cut the ribbon on phase one of the new Highlands Park on Wednesday, Jan. 24. The first phase of the project includes a 5/8 mile fully cemented and lighted walking trail with four benches, which is the beginning of a broader project to provide a recreation destination for the growing neighborhood. The trail is part of a 39-acre plot that will eventually feature multiple recreational amenities. Neighborhood input and planning are ongoing for the final master plan. In December of 2022, Savannah City Council approved a contract with F.H. Paschen to complete the walking trail with landscaping and a parking area in the amount of $1,200,000 which was funded by SPLOST VI. In March of 2023, City Council approved a contract with Georgia Power in the amount of $111,070 from the Capital Improvement Fund for installation of 25 LED lights along the trail.
