Mount Sinai neurotologists as well as general and pediatric otolaryngologists (Drs. Wanna, Cosetti, Perez, Schwam, Londino, Rothschild, Castellano, Culang, Huh, Mra, Namdar, Shin, Tweel, Zeiger) routinely perform myringotomy with tube insertion (“ear tubes”) both in the office and in the operating room for patients with chronic or recurrent ear infections as well as eustachian tube dysfunction. The procedure only takes a few minutes: A small incision is typically made in the ear drum, the fluid suctioned out, and then a small tube placed in the ear drum. The tube usually stays in for a number of months until it falls out on its own or it is removed by the physician. It cannot be seen from the outside, and we longer generally recommend any special precautions for swimming or showering when it is in place.
