Recently, the demolition of a tram section in Zhuhai city has sparked heated discussions online. This 8.89-kilometer-long tram, with a total investment of 2.6 billion yuan (about 360 million USD), began operations in June 2017. After more than three years of service, it was suspended in January 2021 due to an accident and has not operated since. Following over three years of debate over whether to demolish it, on May 7, the Zhuhai city government announced the termination of the tram's operation and the dismantling of its facilities and equipment. This means that the section, once touted as the world's most advanced tram, has become the first modern tram project in China to be dismantled after being put into service.
