A lesson in forgetting your expectations | A retrospective look at Road Trip Adventure

Road Trip Adventure is a 2002 PS2 game which on the surface could easily seem to be aimed virtually completely at younger players. From the cartoonish colour palette, to its deliberately caricatured art style, to its happy-go-lucky soundtrack, it is almost certainly a game which many older driving game fans doubtless passed over without a second thought... But the reality of this refreshingly wholesome little (or rather large in this case) open world game is something rewardingly different: A car-based RPG which on the one hand certainly does keep things simple - and is all the better for it. But on the other hand offers one-chance dialogue options, surprisingly deep-cut real world vehicle models such as the Toyota AE86 and Mazda 787B, useful and over the top tuning parts, and even surprisingly unforgiving aspects of gameplay, from running out of fuel to actual racing.
