The red-vented bulbul is a member of the bulbul family of passerines. It is a resident breeder across the Indian subcontinent, including Sudan extending east to Jordan and parts of Algeria. Preferred Habitat: Woodlands, plains. Seasonal Occurrence: Rare permanent resident. Notes: Red-vented Bulbuls are an introduced species. Its diet of fruits [26] and its aggressive interspecific behavior [27] are blamed for the damage it causes to crops [28] and its ability to out compete native avifauna [29]. Impact. Pycnonotus cafer (red-vented bulbuls) are reported to destroy fruits, flowers, beans, tomatoes, peas and ripe fruit (e.g. bananas and other soft fruits), (Dept. of Agriculture - WA undated). They may also help in the spread of seeds of other invasive species. Behavior and reproduction: The common bulbul is monogamous and has been observed to mate for life. Birds pair through a preening ceremony and duet singing.
