Exploring Jakarta, Indonesia I 2024 I Part 1. Old Town I 4K

Jakarta is the capital city of Indonesia and its largest city by population. Located on the northwest coast of the island of Java, Jakarta serves as the economic, political, and cultural center of Indonesia. No matter where you are in the world, the old town has a unique meaning. This is the area where most cities were first formed, and historic buildings that are hundreds of years old welcome strangers calmly. The street, where time seems to have stopped, retains the glory of its splendid past. Although the new town has taken over the main role as the city has expanded, the old town still retains its old age. There is such a neighborhood in Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The main character is the old town ‘Kota Tua’ located in the north of Jakarta. I went on a walking trip to Kota Tua, which traces the footsteps of modern and contemporary Indonesian history. Fatahillah Square is located in the center of Kota Tua. This square is named after the sultan who drove out the Portuguese in the early 16th century when Jakarta was a small port city called Sunda Kelapa. Afterwards, as the Dutch East India Company was established and the Dutch, armed with guns and swords, began to rule Indonesia, Fatahila Square also appeared at the forefront of history. Fatahila Square, which has become a symbol of Dutch colonial rule that lasted for more than 350 years, faces the old Batavia City Hall building, which has been transformed into the Jakarta History Museum. It is said that colonial rule was discussed and related laws were promulgated in the square and this building, while Indonesians who opposed the Dutch were publicly executed. Fatahila Square, where Japanese troops stayed during the Pacific War, is nothing but a living witness to Indonesian history, which has silently observed the painful history of colonial rule. In addition to the History Museum, the Wayang Museum (Indonesian traditional shadow puppet theater) and the Ceramic Art Museum are attracting attention around the square. These are buildings that were used as churches and courts during the East India Company era and are now being utilized for modern purposes. Here, across from the History Museum, the Batavia Cafe catches the eye. This famous spot was named one of the world's top 100 cafes by Newsweek magazine, and is well known as a must-visit destination for foreign travelers, especially Westerners. If you step up to the second floor of the building that was once used as the Dutch governor's residence, you can see a panoramic view of Fatahila Square. The picture frames that fill the walls and the antique-looking interior give you the feeling of entering an old European cafe. On one side of the stairs, there are also photos of famous people who visited the cafe, including Indonesia's first president Sukarno and Queen Elizabeth of England.
