Adventure! The Cherohala Skyway

Sarah and I recently took a trip on The Cherohala Skyway, a 41-mile scenic route between Tellico Plains Tennessee and Robbinsville North Carolina. Although enjoyable, it wasn't one of my favorite adventures and I'll tell you why.... They have a grounds maintenance issue.... Now think about either the Blue Ridge Parkway or the Foothills Parkway. They have pull-offs and overlooks just like Cherohala. But... they keep the trees cut down in front of those overlooks so that you can actually see out over the vast expanse of mountains. Cherohala instead, has a number of the overlooks with several years of newer tree growth. Sure, you can pull into an overlook and see what??? Trees growing right in front of you. If you're going through this to see distant mountains, there's better trips to take. The Tennessee portion of the Skyway however, is heavily forested and quite beautiful. You're driving through a forest canopy for the most part, and it's very pretty. I suspect that autumn when the leaves turn would be the very best.
