Granular Synthesis

The magnetic tape and the use of reels set the basis for synthesis of samples. From Doctor Who’s theme created by Delia Derbyshire to the Mellotron (and the Chamberlin), to the Ensoniq Mirage and the MPC, and even the romplers, the sample is the final stage in Synthesis. After all, why to play an analog circuitry oscillator as your sound source when you can use any imaginable sound as your “oscillator“? Now the use of digital code allows you to expand the smallest “grains of sound” in “real time” to synthesize them, but I have to tell you: it’s addictive. If you like Science, it’s like watching pictures of microscopic things but translated to sounds; or if you prefer “mythical reality”, it’s like hearing the sounds in your dreams and try to decipher them.
