With a late night arrival on a flight from Helsinki, it was great waking up to an early dose of Winter with all the snow around (this was in October). After an amazing breakfast at the Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara, it was time to do some exploring. First task, to warm the car up as it was below freezing, oh, and managed to get a nice little upgrade from Avis the night before. Instead of a VW Golf, or Skoda, I was given a nice new BMW 118i. Once on the road, it wasn't long before I arrived at the home of Christmas, Santa Claus Village, and the gateway to the Arctic Circle. Truth be known, I only really went there as they have an Arabia, Iittala, Pentik & Marimekko store there... easy way to tick off the shopping list on one hit. No time to say hello to Santa, so back to the hotel, then for a walk on the Winter Hiking trail right at the hotel, and up to the Lookout Tower. Even with a few families grilling some sausages in the fire pits, the silence was refreshing. Back to the hotel, and spent some time chilling out near the fireplace in the lobby enjoying a Hot Chocolate (well 2 actually). Having stayed at the Sky Ounasvaara hotel back in June, the difference was amazing, one visit 24hr sunlight, then the next, a Winter Wonderland, and Winter was still 6+ weeks away.
