Why West Brom aren’t a massive football club

What if West Bromwich Albion didn’t lose their best players? #WBA West Brom. The punching bag, the yo-yo club, zone out and you forget they exist. What have they done for football, anyway? Sporadically they’d chip in with an FA Cup triumph every 20-30 years or so, have one tilt at winning the title once in a blue moon and return back to their anonymity. They had a springboard, in the 1970s, to become a pillar of English football. But it never happened. Laurie Cunningham, Bryan Robson, Peter Barnes. All legends of West Brom, and all commanded enormous fees to leave for clubs like Real Madrid, Manchester United and Leeds United. These were the days of top 6 finishes and runs to the quarter finals of European competition. They were all sold, West Brom were relegated in 1986 and wouldn’t re-surface for a generation. Today we ask: what if the great West Brom exodus of the 70s and 80s didn’t take place?
