Chu Teh-Chun Born: October 24, 1920; Baitou Zhen, China Died: March, 23,, 2014, Paris Nationality: French, Chinese Art Movement: Tachisme, Abstract Art Painting School: École de Paris Genre: abstract Field: painting Soundtrack: Ludwig van Beethoven Piano Trio in D Major Op.70 No1, "Ghost" Chung Trio Allegro vivace e con brio Largo assai ed espressivo Presto Chu Teh-Chun is a Franco-Chinese abstract painter who pioneered the integration of traditional Chinese painting techniques into Western abstract art. Born on October 24, 1920 in Hangzhou, China, he studied at the National School of Fine Arts, now known as the China Academy of Art, where he met Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-Ki, nicknamed "the Three Musketeers" of the Chinese modern art for their inventive and influential styles. In 1949, he moved to Taipei and taught at the National University before moving to Paris in 1955. He was greatly influenced by the abstract works of Nicolas de Stäel, who encouraged him to move away from figurative painting. In 1964 his burgeoning career was boosted by an exhibition at the Carnegie Art Museum in Pittsburgh, and in 1987 the Taipei Museum of National History held a major retrospective of Chu's work. He died on March 23, 2014 in Paris, shortly after the death of his friends Wu Guanzhong and Zao Wou-Ki. Today, his works are exhibited in more than 50 museums around the world.
