In partnership with the Juliette Gordon Low Birthplace, the City of Savannah Municipal Archives presents award-winning author and historian Velma Maia Thomas speaking on “Mamie George Williams: Getting Everything of Value out it for the Race.” A Savannah native, Williams captured national headlines in 1924 when she was appointed the first woman to represent Georgia at the Republican National Convention and became the first African American woman to serve on the Republican National Committee. Williams’ work as a suffragist, community leader, and supporter of the early division of African American Girl Scouts have earned her state-wide recognition.
