How much weight should a healthy baby gain? - Dr.Kritika Agarwal

Most of the parents want to know whether their baby is growing well or not. Growth is very varied and it depends upon the genes, how much feed the baby is taking and it also depends whether baby is exclusively breast fed or formula fed, breast fed babies gain initially more as compared to the formula fed in the first 2 , 3 months and then the formula fed babies will increase comparatively more. normally a newborn loses somewhere around 5 to 10% of their birth weight, which they catch-up by 10 to 14 days and gradually after a month they gain upto 750 to 900 grams in the initial few months. Normally a child will double its weight by 5 months triple by 1 year of age and quadruples by 2 years of age. When you go for regular immunisations, your paediatricians would be plotting the growth of the baby on the growth charts. So if your baby has been growing on one centiles and it has been consistently growing one centile; even if it is on the lower side you need not worry. Growth is both weight as well as height. So if your baby is not gaining that much of weight, but the baby is gaining height and is acquiring all the developmental milestones that the baby needs to be having, you need not worry, it is only required for parents to worry only if your paediatrician has concern. Otherwise, be happy about it.
