Fes, one of Morocco's oldest cities, is a place of rich cultural heritage and historical significance. Founded in the 9th century, Fes is home to Fes el-Bali, the largest and oldest medina in Morocco. This labyrinthine city center boasts over 9'000 narrow streets and alleys lined with markets, mosques, and madrasas, or Islamic schools, showcasing great examples of Moroccan architecture. Our tour starts and ends at the famous Blue Gate, or also named Grande Porte Bab Boujeloud (00:00 / 09:10). Fes is famous for its traditional handicrafts, particularly in leatherwork, which can be observed in the iconic Chouara Tannery (04:13), where artisans use centuries-old methods to dye and treat leather. Fes is known for its vibrant souks, where traditional Moroccan goods like spices, ceramics, and textiles can be found. At Place Seffarine (02:35), one can meet artisans working the cupper tableware using the methods of their ancestors. The Al-Qarawiyyin mosque (01:18), located in the center of the medina, despite its alleged historical and cultural relevance, is beyond reach for non-Muslims.
