With individual stomp boxes, this is pretty straightforward to set-up, 2 cables are used to connect your guitar and drive or compressor pedals into the amplifiers input, and 2 more cables are used to connect your delay or reverb to the amps effects send and return, hence the name 4 cable method. But it is also possible to use this method with an all in one multi-effects units, splitting effects modules either pre or post pre-amp, with gives you greater flexibility over the tone, and in this video, we show you how. In this beginners guide, we show you how to connect your multi effects pedal to your guitar and amplifiers input and effects send and return (it's not as complicated as you might think!), talk about how to route certain effects either before or after the amplifier's pre-amp stage, and give you some audio examples to help you get started with the 4 cable method.
